My 15 year old, Savannah, was looking for a way to spend her Christmas Break totally encompassed by horses. Besides playing with my horse, her horse and her sister's horse, Savannah wanted to work with my friend's horse, too! She loves groundwork with young horses. This is where Spice, a beautiful 6 year old buckskin mare, comes in!
Spice is owned by our friend, Keith. He plans to use her as his trail riding horse soon. She is a sweet and absolutely stunning buckskin! She's also a quick learner!! Of course Spice was a bit nervous when she first got here, but she settled down nicely in the round pen after she made friends with our Shetland Pony, Ginger.
This morning started Day One of Boot Camp! Savannah worked on earning Spice's respect in the round pen. It took a bit of time and patience but Spice did great! She had a hard time staying at the fence trotting in the same direction. Savannah had to show her how to stay trotting in the same direction until she was asked to switch directions.
After about 10 minutes, Spice was sweating and breathing heavy so Savannah gave her a break. She worked on leading Spice with a halter. Of course, Spice did a wonderful job.
Next was flexing and disengaging her hindquarters. Spice was a bit reluctant but caught on very quickly.
At the very end, Spice was very quiet and ready for a nap. I don't think Spice got the memo that Savannah was horse-crazy and LOVES to groom!!! So, Spice got a little shut eye while getting all dolled up! Is Keith going to be surprised when he comes over for a visit! Savannah's even pondering what color ribbons will look the best in Spice's mane and tail. (Sorry Keith, I can't control her!)
Check back tomorrow - Day Two of Boot Camp............
